Breform (Aug 09)

A new surgical procedure that comes with little pain, minimal scarring, and leaves you with permanent firm breasts, will have you running to put on that sexy halter-top again.

For two decades, inventor Jonathan Hamilton has developed products for the security and aviation industries. He says he is the first man to have built a rigid airship "since the Hindenburg burst into flames".

But his most successful invention came from a request from his wife, Liesa, 28, whose breasts began to droop after giving birth. Liesa searched the Internet in frustration, looking for ways to lift her breasts, but did not find the right option.

For help, she turned to her husband.

Hamilton read medical books, surfed the Internet, and consulted doctors about what was needed to improve the breast-lifting surgery, mastopexy, which is said to be painful and leaves scarring.

The result is Breform, an implant that does not make your breasts bigger, but lifts them higher.

During the three-hour procedure the surgeon makes two small incisions underneath the breast and outer aureola, then inserts the polypropylene implant, and attaches it to fascia, which is a layer of fat just above the muscle of the chest wall.

The flat, mesh material implant is cut, stitched inside, and made to form a conical shape.

Polypropylene is a synthetic material used to manufacture items such as plastic bottles, carpets, and even automobiles. It is also used for making surgical syringes and medical equipment because of its resistance to bacterial growth.

Explaining why he chose the polypropylene, Hamilton said: "We looked for a material that has no known side-effects, was soft, and strong and thin enough".

Dr Petrus van Deventer, a Cape Town surgeon with 25 years of plastic surgery experience, says the mastopexy surgery leaves long scars from the breast to the nipple... and if the skin has poor elasticity, the scar marks will get larger.

However with Breform, the skin is draped over the implant. It is kept in place by the prosthesis, which lessens chances of the skin stretching.

After surgery, patients stay overnight in hospital. They feel pain for about two to seven days, and recuperate fully within a month.

Breform was launched in May and will be available to the market in four to six weeks. The surgery is done by Breform-registered surgeons and costs between £5000 to £6000.

Dr van Deventer is the first surgeon to perform the operation and has done 11 operations since May.

Hamilton expects to penetrate the international market soon, as his company has secured worldwide patents.

If you would like more information about Breform, please complete our our Request Form to the right of this page selecting NEW PROCEDURES from the options listed.
